There is a large ratio of the population that hold a truly perverted idea of what good eating and food is all about, and it is idea that is killing not only their health, but whatever opportunity they may have for sustained, healthy weight loss. As a niche marketing professional who sits at the computer all day, this is a topic of particular interest to me. Luckily, it is a misconception that can be easily countered with true empirical facts, if only people are open to listen to logical reasoning.

Take, for instance, the following - which illustrates this widespread trend of misconception in living color - in the fifth season premeir of the TV show “The Office,” the corporate office creates a contest between all of the branches of their company to see which branch can as a group shed the highest amount of pounds in two months time. In the middle of the competition, when the group is not losing as much as they want to be, one of the characters exclaims, “I can’t do this by myself, people! Come on! Kelly and I are the only ones who have either passed out or almost passed out!”

The sad truth is, that idea only rings true to the viewing audience because it echoes the beliefs of a lot of folks when it comes to diet and weight loss plans - no pain, no gain. If you’re not starving, if you don’t feel like you’re dying or going crazy, if you haven’t nearly fainted - then you are not doing it correctly. Right?

That’s a patented falsehood! As a matter of fact, the real story is pretty much the polar opposite of that crazy notion. You don’t need to have a personal trainer certification to know that you shouldn’t punish your body like that.

To be effective and healthy, an food program must be in balance. Any food program which is too extreme on any spectrum - very low in carbohydrates, quite low in fat, or very low in calories - is not only hurtful for your physicality but not effective in the long run. Of course, these plans will look attractive at first blush - they are clearly outlined, there are very well defined rules that make it extremely clear whether or not you are sticking to the plan or if you aren’t, and in many cases plans} do manifest a quick weight loss return up front.

If you want to achieve weight loss that is both long term and healthy, the best thing is to utilize common sense. If a diet feels torturous to you, chances are it is. It certainly is a possibility to get thinner and feel strong doing it. The biggest points to losing weight and being healthy are eating a sensible diet that is reasonably low in fat and calories, and to mix in ongoing movement in your daily routine - preferably accompanied by some hot new music. You’ll be shocked what a significant difference it makes!
